What is freon?

Freon is the gas that your air conditioning system uses to heat and cool. Without the proper freon charge your system will not cool and heat properly. Most household systems use either R-22 or R-410a. R-22 is being fazed out of production, and its replacement is R-410a. R-22 and R-410a should never be mixed; this is because R-410a is not compatible with R-22 compressors or evap coils. When R-410a and R-22 are combined, an acidic reaction occurs which will damage your system. Also, R-22 system components are not designed to run at the refrigerant pressures common in R-410a systems.
